Home Tip: Cleaning When Company’s Coming Over

September 18, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

If you are having company over and want the house to appear clean focus on your main rooms and 1 bathroom. You don’t have to give everyone a tour so don’t worry about cleaning the rooms that have doors on them!

Go room by room focusing on removing laundry, dishes, and clutter. Then wipe down all surfaces, run the vaccuum, and wash/dry all dishes. Bam.. you are ready for company in about 45 minutes! Don’t sweat the small stuff. No one notices if the floors are not mopped!

Home Tip: How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

September 8, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

A Simple way to Clean Your Makeup Brushes
I absolutely love using my makeup brushes. However, they do require a little maintenance from time to time. They can become full of germs which In turn can cause your face to break out. I personally like to clean my brushes every other week. My cleaning process is quick and easy to do.

You will need:
1 teaspoon of shampoo (shampoo of your choice)
2 cups of Luke warm water
4-5 paper towels (depending on the amount of brushes to be cleaned)

Instructions:
Wet the brushes under running water that is luke warm
Remove from running water
Take one brush at a time and place securely in your hand and add shampoo
For 1-2 minutes gently rub the brush (with soap) in the palm of your hand to create a lather Rinse brush under luke warm water to remove soap and makeup residue from brush
Place the brush onto paper towel to absorb the moisture contained in the brush overnight to allow brush to fully dry Repeat all steps for as many brushes you want to clean
Inspect the brushes the next day and gently tap brush onto dry area of paper towel, no moisture should be present!!!!

WARNING: Do not dry brushes in a upright position, they will take much longer to dry +/or ruin your brush

Getting Rid of Bats — Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Work?

July 31, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com 98 Comments

How to get rid of bats who have the audacity to invade your home.

If you’re trying desperately to get rid of bats from your home, I can feel your pain. Your fingers were probably shaking a bit as you clicked this link. It’s a scarier scenario than many people think — especially for a “girly girl” like me. Bats fly and they look absolutely gross up close. Some of them crawl on the floor using their wings to get around. It’s very unnerving.

A few years ago, I had the misfortune of having a series of close encounters with bats in my home-all in a few short period of time (about a few days). I have seen one or two bats in my home right after moving in, but never to the extent as this particular situation.

One bat flew in my room while I was sleeping (through a space above the air conditioner). Another greeted me at the door when I came home. This happened in the same day and I was freaking out. I’m still not 100% sure how they get in, but I did learn that they can crawl into a space that’s a fraction of an inch.

Nothing for Bats?

The night that I found a bat hanging out in my living room, I went to Home Depot and asked them, in a panic, “What do you have to get rid of bats?” They chuckled and said “Ma’am I don’t think we have anything for bats, sorry.”

So I went through the aisles anyway and tried to find something, anything that would allow me to expel or battle these flying rats. I finally came across an ultrasonic pest repeller device — the type that you plug into the wall so that it transmits a sound that only pests can hear.

I figured it was worth a try. After having a friend remove the bats currently in the house, I bought a few ultrasonic pest devices and plugged them up around my home.

Many Different Opinions on How to Get Rid of Bats

Now I want to give a fair and balanced discussion of using these ultrasonic pest repellers to get rid of bats. I went to over 10 different websites to do research. A lot of the websites published by professional bat removal experts (pest control services) say that these devices do not work on bats. The pest control experts obviously would know the most about how to get rid of bat colonies and nests and state that the only truly effective solution is to get them to leave then seal the exit. But you have to wonder if some are putting down these devices to get more clients. Bat removal can easily exceed $500.

Others say that the ultrasonic sound will only serve to confuse the bats, as they use sound to “see.” (Read more about that here.) These folks make the point that if the bats can’t follow sounds properly due to the loud screeching or beeping emitted by these ultrasonic tools, they will probably just bump into walls and get annoyed.

On the other hand, a few websites contained reviews from customers who said that these ultrasonic pest repeller devices absolutely DO work.

In my case I was willing to try just about anything. So I went ahead and ordered a few more ultrasonic devices online (the P3 Attack Wave models –they were only about $20 each). The reviews were decent. I plugged them in on the top and bottom floors of my home. Recently I learned that this model and this model are more specifically targeted to get rid of bats.

The Verdict

After putting the ultrasonic devices on the top floor of my home I no longer had an issue with bats coming into my house, but they were still apparently living in the attic. I eventually had a hire a local bat control expert to place netting in the area where the bats were coming in and out of the home.

So the ultimate answer to the question of whether ultrasonic pest repellers work is yes and no. They may keep them away from your living space, but the more persistent ones might still take up residence in an attic or crawlspace. I do not want to minimize the expert opinion of pest control companies, but at the very least this may be a much cheaper temporary alternative solution for someone who is disgusted by bats yet doesn’t have $500 laying around at the moment to hire a bat expert to put up netting. As an added bonus it may also keep other pests and rodents away. * Note, some users have said that these devices can bother pets, so if you do get one make sure you keep an eye on Fluffy and Fido.

Another Option for Getting Rid of Bats

As I mentioned earlier, I had to hire someone to exclude the bats from my attic. This is a job that takes under an hour to do (maybe two if you count the removal of the netting and filling of spaces with foam) and shouldn’t cost more than $300-$500 so don’t let anyone take advantage of you here. Some home carpenters know how to do this work.

Another cheaper option for getting rid of bats is to buy the netting and set up what is called a “one-way door” yourself. The only cost is netting, Gorilla duct tape, foam sealant and a ladder that’s long and secure enough to safely reach the entry point (get someone to spot you and be extra careful).

First you have to find out where they’re coming in and out, so go outside after dusk and take a look around possible exit points.

Once you figure that out, you have to get on a ladder (in the morning when they’re sleeping) to securely tape the netting so that the bats can crawl out but can’t get back in. You see, when they try to fly back into the hole after leaving, they’re going to keep trying to go in directly, but the netting won’t allow them to. They don’t know how to come back in indirectly but crawling around the netting. Read more about this here.

After a few nights, check to see if they’re still coming and in out. Once they’re gone, you can remove the netting and fill the holes with foam sealant or just leave the netting up.

I also strongly suggest that you make sure there aren’t any other places where the bats can find their way inside — if so, fill them with foam as well after putting up the netting. Some people choose to buy bat houses to give them a new place to live in the woods.

Have you had a problem with bats? Have you used ultrasonic devices or tried putting up bat netting yourself? Please tell me all about your own solution for getting rid of bats in the comments area.

Getting Mold off of a Warm Refrigerator (Question Answered)

July 29, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Removing mold from a warm refrigerator (question answered).

Home Question from Twitter:

LG_refrigerator_interior“@LovingOurHome can you pls suggest a way to remove mould from the rubber beading of my refrigerator door-switched it off during a vacation”

Answer Posted by Lorraine (how to remove mold on a refrigerator):

“I used 3 parts hot water and 1 part bleach to safely kill mold. Use a cleaning cloth to clean and saturate rubber. Repeat until mold is not present. Last step is to then use hot water to remove any excess bleach left behind. All done while wearing gloves and proper ventilation. The green way is to use vinegar and water. I believe bleach is much more beneficial to remove all the mold.

Also for weekly maintenance use white vinegar(in a spray bottle) and baking soda (will sizzle) to clean once a week for 2 weeks to totally eradicate.

Also recommend not turning off fridge. Warm air with no ventilation creates mold. Recommend turning fridge temp down while on vacation.

Hope this helps!”

A $2 Solution to Secure Your Fitted Sheets So that They Don’t Slide Around

July 25, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

One of my biggest pet peeves is having my fitted sheets slide off the bed while I’m sleeping or trying to watch Netflix in peace. It’s messy, uncomfortable and you have to re-tuck the sheet back under your mattress each morning. Madness.

The simple solution to secure your fitted sheets is to get a pair of what are called Sheet Suspenders. They use suspender-like straps to secure either side of the fitted sheet beneath the mattress using clips.

But I felt like going the cheaper route, so I went to the dollar store and picked up 2 things:

– an elastic bandage (about 3″ wide)
– binder clamps (the type you use to hold a thick stack of paper)

IMG_1474

$2 … Pick it up! (That’s a little expression my friends and I used to say when something was really easy, peasy).

You can probably already get a visual of what the plan is here.

First, I measured the width of the bed. The bed I was fitting was 39″ (yes, just enough room for me and my cat, don’t judge me!!).

I cut the elastic bandage so that it was a few inches less than the width of the bed (about 36″) because it needs to stretch a bit.

Next, I folded the bandage in half (lengthwise or widthwise) and used two binder clamps to hold it closed. This was just so that I could cut the bandage do that it was thinner.

IMG_1476

Once it was cut, I took the end of one piece and looped it into the handle of one of the binder clamps. I double knotted the elastic band for security, then repeated the process on the other end of the band.

When you’re done you’ve got a crude version of a suspender strap for your fitted sheet.

IMG_1477

It isn’t pretty, but who is going to see what’s going on under your mattress?

I took one clamp and connected it to the bottom of one side of the fitted sheet, then pulled it over to the other side to clamp that side in place. Repeat the process on the other side. Hold in your core while you’re lifting the mattress — you can do it!

Voila — a quick $2 solution to secure your fitted sheets and prevent them from sliding off while you’re sleeping. Got a better suggestion for securing fitted sheets so that they stay in place? Post it in the comments below!

Tips for Organizing Your Closet

July 3, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Keeping your closet organized is easier than you may think. With a little time and effort you will soon be enjoying your clean, well-organized closet. Maybe you’ll actually be able to find something in there!

First, go through each clothing item that you have on hangers and pull out any unworn items for the past year and place them on your bed. These unworn items can possibly be donated to your local Goodwill. I personally, think that just the idea of helping someone in need makes it easier to part with the unworn clothing.

Next, take out clothes that are out of season. If you have shelving units in your closet, fold the out-of-season clothing neatly and place on the shelf. These items are only taking up the room required for your clothes that are in season. If you don’t have any shelving system, you may want to purchase storage bins that fit under your bed. Just slide them under there until you need them in the future.

If you have a fairly roomy, tall closet space, you might want to invest in what is called a Closet Doubler. These allow you to hang two rows of clothing on your rack instead of just one.

Second, let’s deal with your shoes, belts and scarfs. Remove your shoes, boots and other accessories from the closet. Examine your shoes — if they have not been worn in a year or so, donate them. Only return shoes that you wear regularly back to the closet on a hanging shoe rack or the floor. Next, store any out of season footwear in bins and put them under your bed or on top of the shelves in your closet. As for belts and scarfs, purchase another over the door rack to hang these items neatly. Another simple idea is to simply tie several scarfs on one hanger and loop your belts onto the hanger hook..

When you’re all done organizing your closet, give it a fresh smell by adding a few of your favorite dryer sheets to the shelves and on the floor in the back.

If you follow these simple tips at the end of every season, your closet will always be a place where you can not only store stuff, but actually FIND stuff to use or wear!
