Staying Cool this Summer without an Air Conditioner

June 13, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Many people find it difficult to imagine staying inside in the summer heat without an air conditioner running on full blast. However, there are ways to keep you and your home at a tolerable temperature without the use of an air conditioner for much of the summer (in certain regions). Even if you do choose to use central air or a window AC unit, these tips will help you save some money on your monthly electric bill.

Keep the Blinds Closed

First, if you have large windows in your home and have gotten into the habit of opening your blinds and curtains in the morning, DON’T. Opening the blinds and curtains allows the sun to penetrate and heat up your home. You definitely don’t want to do that with or without an AC running. Keep all blinds drawn shut at the hottest times of the day. Doing this will help lower the temperature inside. Also, consider purchasing room darkening shades or heavy opaque blinds to help block out even more of the sun’s rays. If you want sun rays to enter the home, only open the blinds on small windows.

Shut off Unneeded Electronics

All electronic devices emit heat. This includes your TV, refrigerator, computer, laptop, computer monitor, gaming devices and even your light bulbs. Obviously, you must keep the fridge plugged in, but what about everything else? For example, if your computer is in “sleep mode” it will still emit heat. Try shutting off ALL unnecessary electronic devices in every room in your house. Use low-watt energy efficient light bulbs (the ones that are spiraled). You can even go as far as unplugging the devices from the wall. FYI, your electric company, may in fact charge you for having items simply plugged into the wall, even when off. It’s a minimal fee, yet, it adds up to money wasted.

Cover Your Seats With Cool Material

Cover your favorite sofa and seats with a 100% cotton cover or throw to keep things cool. Think about it — if you have leather or cloth furniture, your natural body heat will warm the seat and in turn raise your body temperature. The cotton fibers allow your body to remain at an more even temperature. It also helps tremendously if you take a cold shower before relaxing in your favorite seat.

More Simple Tips to Stay Cool this Summer

Staying Cool without an Air Conditioner
Ceiling fans are very cooling and help distribute air throughout the room.

Here are a few more simple tips for staying cool this summer without an air conditioner:

1- Have plenty of ice cold water around you at all times.
2- Move at a much slower pace when home (what’s the rush?)
3- Place floor fans facing the ceiling at the center of each room and turn on ceiling fans. Open the window (while keeping the blinds drawn).

Fans will keep the air circulating throughout your home and it will create a flow of air from room to room.

An air conditioning unit is a modern day luxury, but it isn’t always necessary. Use these tips to enjoy your time indoors during the summer and not feel like your house is a sauna.

Stay Cool!!!

3 Good iPhone/iPad Docking Systems Under $75

March 7, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Home stereo systems have really changed — there has been an explosion of new technology in just a short period of time.  No longer do you need a bulky home stereo system with large speakers to enjoy music at home.  Nowadays, most people have an iPhone or iPod that stores your music or at least allows you to access hundreds of music stations from your device.  I decided to catch up with the times and search for an affordable, slender and stylish docking system to play and enjoy my music.  I searched on Amazon.com and here are 3 Good iPhone/iPad Docking Systems that I found that cost under $75.

I like this affordable tabletop docking system because it is a docking system and a clock radio.  Sony has been a well known brand for electronics for many years.  So I believe the sound will be outstanding!

iLuv Aud 5® Premium High-Fidelity Full-Range Lightning Dock and Speaker

31yZ8-jyAbL._SX425_I really like this iLuv docking system. It’s the basic desktop device that someone with an iPhone would be looking for. It has high fidelity speakers, a passive radiator and should easily fit right in with your room’s decor.  The sound comes from four locations on the speaker for the best audio.

Craig Tower Speaker Docking System for iPod iPhone iPad, Digital FM Radio with Aux In, Black (CHT910)

This tower docking system has some great reviews.  It not only works with the iPhone but is compatible with Android tablets/ Smart Phones and a whole lot more. It’s ideal for a get-together — it’s easy to interchange your device with your friend’s devices when you have a gathering at your house.

AR+SOUND AR1004BK Bluetooth LED Lights Tall Tower Stereo Speaker System with Built-In Radio, Docking Station and Remote Control (Black)

71cfPNbl0gL._SL1500_This tower stereo system looks like it sells out often, and has pretty good reviews. It has four separate (visible) speaker locations and is compatible with wide variety of devices, including iPhones, Android phones, Galaxy smartphones, MP3 players and even the Amazon tablet. It also is compatible with Bluetooth technology. The attractive LED lights make it perfect for a big party with friends!

Since I’m looking for an iPhone/iPad Docking Systems under $75 that I can take around the house with me, I’m look at the first option (iLuv Aud 5®) for my home. Happy shopping!

3 Good Cappuccino (Espresso) Makers Under $75

February 10, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Almost every time I visit a coffee shop, whether it’s Starbucks or a neighborhood cafe, I get an extra shot of espresso in my cup. I really enjoy it and it gives me a boost for my day and when doing work. Yet, what I do not particular enjoy is the cost per cup! I decided to browse Amazon.com for an affordable, durable and stylish cappuccino maker that I could put on my kitchen counter and use every morning. Here are the 3 interesting espresso maker machines, all under $75 (as of the publishing of this post), that I’m considering:

Krups XP 1000 Steam Expresso Machine With Frothing Nozzle For Cappuccino

Krups cappuccino machine. This machine resembles an “old school” coffee pot, only much smaller. It has a 3-way switch to adjust the strength of your cappuccino and froth the milk. The brew time is just 3 or 4 minutes. It’s a very compact espresso machine that will probably tuck comfortably into a small nook on your kitchen counter.

Hamilton Beach Espresso Maker

Hamilton Beach Espresso and Cappuccino machine.I like this machine because it looks a lot like the machine you might find in Starbucks or another popular coffee shop. It advertises “café quality results,” which is definitely what I’m looking for. It has a 15 bar Italian pump that presses out the espresso, and steams and froths the milk for a perfect white-topped cappuccino. It also can brew two individual cups of espresso at the same time, so you can make one for you and one for your love. A nice way to start the day.

Bialetti 6800 Moka Express 6-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker

Bialetti Stovetop Espresso Maker. This is a traditional espresso maker that’s popular in Italy. You add water and your favorite coffee to the bottom compartments and the espresso brews its way up to the top compartment in about 5 minutes. It’s comes in a 1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 cup size depending on how much you like your espresso. While this doesn’t make cappuccinos, it is considered the premier way to make an authentic strong cup of espresso, takes up little space, and can be carried from room to room for serving to guests. It’s also reasonably priced at about $30.

I was really impressed at the choices and prices for these cappuccino maker machines on Amazon. I’m currently leaning toward the Hamilton Beach Espresso Maker because it’s right in the middle and gives me every option I’m looking for.

DTV Transition: How to Watch TV Without a Cable Box

August 3, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Here is a quick guide to help you understand how to watch television without a cable box.

After the Digital Television Transition ( DTV transition) that occurred back in February of 2009 non-cable subscribers were required to buy digital to analog TV converter boxes. After February 17, 2009, television stations stopped broadcasting over analog airwaves so only digital broadcasting is available. If you’ve recently cut costs by getting rid of cable, here is a quick guide to help you understand the technology and how to watch TV without a cable box.

Analog vs Digital

Are you confused about the difference between analog and digital TV? In short, digital signals are sent out as numbers, 0s and 1s, bits of information like a computer, whereas analog signals are a continuous stream of information being transmitted.

Think of a digital clock that displays numbers versus a wall clock that “demonstrates” the time with a continuously moving arm. If a digital alarm clock is broken, it’s off, you can’t see anything. But if wall clock breaks, you can still see the hands and numbers. An analog television signal comes through an antenna or “rabbit ears” whereas a digital signal comes through a tiny “computer” (like a cable box or digital to analog TV converter box).

Why are They Doing It?

The main reason given for the digital transition is that freeing up the analog airwaves allows emergency responders to communicate more effectively. The only visuals on analog TV will probably be emergency communications from your local police and fire department. Also, broadcasters went over to digital transmissions because they believe it is more useful to consumers. It is also seen as a more efficient way to transmit television waves.

And of course many people speculate that the transition happened because of money. A number of companies made money from the digital conversion (cable companies, retailers, sellers of digital to analog TV converter boxes and electronics manufacturers).

What You Need in Order to See Basic TV Stations

If you already have a digital cable account with your local cable or satellite television company, you do not need to do anything. You should have a box that allows you to receive these basic stations. If you do not have cable or satellite TV you can buy a digital to analog TV converter.

The digital converters, which are available at most major electronics retailers, are available for about $40.

And if you have a pair of old “rabbit ears” antennas in your basement, you might have to dust them off! Once you have your digital to analog TV converter box you will need to hook it up to the antenna in order to get a strong signal. You will be given clear directions with the digital converter box.

So even if you have decided to get rid of your cable subscription to cut costs, you should still be able to watch TV without a cable box. Just make that one time purchase of a digital converter box and continue to enjoy your shows on network television as usual.
