Tips for Organizing Your Refrigerator

November 9, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

At times it may seem as if your refrigerator has a mind of its own… Before you know it’s in complete disarray, stuffed and disorganized. Keeping your refrigerator organized not only looks much more welcoming when you open the door each morning, it also helps you cut down on the amount of food that is wasted by spoilage. A lot of food spoils simply because you can’t see it! Here are some easy tips for organizing your refrigerator.

refrigerator for filling

1) Keep all milk and cold drink products on the first (top) shelf. This is actually the coldest part of the refrigerator where you’re meant to to store these highly perishable beverages. Make sure to arrange these items from smallest to tallest. This will help you see the entire first shelf from front to back. You might also put the beverages with upcoming expiration dates at the front.

2) Place all of your leftovers in tupperware with secure lids and put it onto the middle or second shelf. It will help you tremendously if you label each container with the date that is was refrigerated. This will let you know that the food in the container is safe to consume.

3) Typically, the third shelf is the last and least visible shelf. This is the shelf where you want to store items that you don’t need to access that often. You might put some bagged apples and hardy vegetables there (like carrots, celery and cabbage), extra food that has an extended shelf life (like eggs) or wet cat food.

In the bottom there are typically two bins. In one (sometimes called the “crisper” drawer), store soft vegetables that get bruised easy. Soft vegetables include tomatoes, fresh cilantro, fresh dill and avocados. The other bin is where you organize the meats you plan to eat that week. Excess meats should be packed in airtight bags in the freezer. Every Sunday morning, take your meat for the week out of cold storage and refill your meat bin.

4) Lastly, place all your condiments, like pickles and sauces, on the side door. Try to arrange your condiments by placing the most used ones on the middle shelf for easy access. For example, put all salad dressing, mayo, ketchup and mustard on the second shelf. Organize the other shelves according to your daily needs.

We hope these tips for organizing your refrigerator will help you to get your fridge in order!

Paper Towel Tally Sheet – Reduce Paper Towel Usage

July 10, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

In a recent post I gave tips for how to reduce your usage of paper towels. I’ve begun to think about this topic more since I am definitely a person who overuses them. I’ve learned that many people get by just fine in their kitchens without paper towels, ever. They use real towels and other items to get the job done.

So I got an idea for how to regulate my paper towel use and encourage myself to think twice before tearing off a sheet. It’s called “The Paper Towel Tally.” It’s a PDF printout that you can post on your kitchen cabinet or another place near your roll of paper towel. Every time you tear off a sheet, you have to mark a line under the reason. Check it out below (and download the PDF version here).

Paper Towel Tally by LovingOurHome.com

Just keep a pen near the paper and draw a “scratch mark” under each reason each time you take a sheet (you know, like |||| is five marks). At the end of the month do a tally and find out what you’re using most of your paper towels on. Then you can find a different solution, like the ones I recommended in this post.

Feel free to share this Paper Towel Tally sheet with other people who need it. Hope it helps you to reduce your usage of paper towels over time!

Tip to Quickly Soothe Mosquito Bites

July 9, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

It’s too late. The mosquito got ‘cha and you’re already noticing swelling and redness in the area. What to do?

One way to quickly soothe a recent mosquito bite is to wash the area with oatmeal soap. Just lather up, wash it just like you would wash your hands, leave it on for about 3 minutes, rinse and dry. The oatmeal helps to reduce swelling and itching.

Natural Oatmeal SoapThe best solution is prevention. Be sure to spray yourself with a good mosquito repellent before you go outside with bare arms and legs.

* Make sure you’re not allergic to oatmeal, oat products or other added ingredients.

How to Make Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

June 17, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

We’ve all had those moments of craving a pint of cold ice cream on a hot summer day or night. If you don’t really feel like running to the supermarket to pay $5.99 or more for a name brand ice cream, try making Ice Cream in a Bag. This is a simple way to make homemade ice cream without buying an ice cream maker.

Making ice cream in a bag is also great because you get to add your own ingredients. You can use a sugar substitute like Splenda or Stevia instead of white sugar and add sugar-free cookies and fresh fruits. You can also reduce sugar intake by using Half and Half instead of regular milk. The ideas are endless.

On this particular occasion, I decided to make chocolate ice cream with chocolate chip cookie pieces and strawberry ice cream with shortbread cookie pieces (see pics).

photo 5What You’ll Need…

Ice Cream in a Bag

  • About a cup of Half and Half or heavy cream (heavy cream is probably best for creamy ice cream, but Half and Half is the lowest in sugar)
  • The added ingredients you want (such as sliced frozen strawberries, cookies, Oreos, a bit of vanilla extract or vanilla beans for vanilla ice cream or a scoop of chocolate powder to make chocolate ice cream)
  • One tablespoon of Splenda, Stevia OR regular sugar
  • 1 or 2 small, strong zip lock bags
  • 2 large, strong zip lock bags
  • At least 2 cups of ice
  • 3 tablespoons of Kosher Salt

(Whatever you do, don’t add any water to the small bag full of cream! That makes it too icy.)

Instructions

Add your half and half, Splenda (or sugar), and all of your other desired ingredients to the small Ziploc bag and seal it securely. You might also add a tiny sprinkle of salt to the cream to bring out the flavor more. Reinforce with an additional small ziploc bag if you think it’s needed. Shake everything together thoroughly and make sure that there aren’t any leaks.

Ice Cream in a BagNow get the large Ziploc bag. Add ice along with the salt. Reinforce it with another large Ziploc bag just in case.

Place the small bag of cream inside of the larger Ziploc bags and zip those closed securely as well. Shake vigorously for 10-15 minutes. (The shaking process takes some time, but you can look at it as a moment to get some exercise and burn off some calories before you enjoy your cold treat 🙂

Scoop the ice cream out of the Ziploc bag, add any toppings you like and enjoy!

Make this Ice Cream in a Bag whenever you get a craving for something cold and sweet!

Staying Cool this Summer without an Air Conditioner

June 13, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Many people find it difficult to imagine staying inside in the summer heat without an air conditioner running on full blast. However, there are ways to keep you and your home at a tolerable temperature without the use of an air conditioner for much of the summer (in certain regions). Even if you do choose to use central air or a window AC unit, these tips will help you save some money on your monthly electric bill.

Keep the Blinds Closed

First, if you have large windows in your home and have gotten into the habit of opening your blinds and curtains in the morning, DON’T. Opening the blinds and curtains allows the sun to penetrate and heat up your home. You definitely don’t want to do that with or without an AC running. Keep all blinds drawn shut at the hottest times of the day. Doing this will help lower the temperature inside. Also, consider purchasing room darkening shades or heavy opaque blinds to help block out even more of the sun’s rays. If you want sun rays to enter the home, only open the blinds on small windows.

Shut off Unneeded Electronics

All electronic devices emit heat. This includes your TV, refrigerator, computer, laptop, computer monitor, gaming devices and even your light bulbs. Obviously, you must keep the fridge plugged in, but what about everything else? For example, if your computer is in “sleep mode” it will still emit heat. Try shutting off ALL unnecessary electronic devices in every room in your house. Use low-watt energy efficient light bulbs (the ones that are spiraled). You can even go as far as unplugging the devices from the wall. FYI, your electric company, may in fact charge you for having items simply plugged into the wall, even when off. It’s a minimal fee, yet, it adds up to money wasted.

Cover Your Seats With Cool Material

Cover your favorite sofa and seats with a 100% cotton cover or throw to keep things cool. Think about it — if you have leather or cloth furniture, your natural body heat will warm the seat and in turn raise your body temperature. The cotton fibers allow your body to remain at an more even temperature. It also helps tremendously if you take a cold shower before relaxing in your favorite seat.

More Simple Tips to Stay Cool this Summer

Staying Cool without an Air Conditioner
Ceiling fans are very cooling and help distribute air throughout the room.

Here are a few more simple tips for staying cool this summer without an air conditioner:

1- Have plenty of ice cold water around you at all times.
2- Move at a much slower pace when home (what’s the rush?)
3- Place floor fans facing the ceiling at the center of each room and turn on ceiling fans. Open the window (while keeping the blinds drawn).

Fans will keep the air circulating throughout your home and it will create a flow of air from room to room.

An air conditioning unit is a modern day luxury, but it isn’t always necessary. Use these tips to enjoy your time indoors during the summer and not feel like your house is a sauna.

Stay Cool!!!

How to Protect Food from Insects at Outdoor Barbecues and Picnics

June 13, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

The more warm and sunny it gets outside, the more you, your family and friends are going to get excited about firing up the grill and barbecuing up a storm. But as exciting as it sounds in theory, bringing food outside can be a challenge due to the wide variety of bugs and flying insects that also want to party with you and have some of your delicious food. Here are some simple ideas for how to protect your food (and guests) from annoying insects.

Table Tent for Flies

As soon as the food hits the table outside, you’re probably going to have to start contending with flies who want to try some. Flies are mostly harmless, but they are very unsanitary insects—they sit and feed on feces, dirt and dead carcasses—so you don’t want them near your food. The best way to shield your food from flies is to get a couple of Pop-Up Mesh Screen Food Cover Tents. They’re made of a light mesh material that the average fly can’t penetrate and are super affordable (2 for about $10). Flies might still fly around the area, but you won’t have to worry about them sitting on your fried chicken and potato salad.Barbecue Outdoor Grilling

Citronella Candles for Mosquitoes

There’s another type of fly that come to your barbecue to “feed” but not on the chicken. Mosquitoes are looking to make a meal out of your guests. One of the best ways to keep mosquitoes and other flying insects out of the area is to surround your guests with citronella candles. Citronella is a very fragrant oil that is extracted from a plant that mosquitoes don’t like. There are a number of styles of citronella candles that you can buy that will make your party look and smell great while protecting you from mosquito bites. It’s also a good idea to keep a mosquito repellent spray handy for your guests.

Keeping Ants Away

If you’re planning on having a picnic or barbecue in the park, ants are going to be competing for your lunch. If you want to keep ants away from your picnic here are a few ideas:

  • Create a mixture of borax and regular sugar to sprinkle around the perimeter of your picnic of barbecue area. The ants will be attracted to the smell of sugar before they even have a chance to reach your table. The borax gets rid of ant colonies.
  • If you just want to keep the ants away, draw a line around your picnic area with a big piece of sidewalk chalk or sprinkle flour. They will be repelled by either substance.
  • If your foot is on top of a picnic table, put all four legs in a bucket of water. Ants can’t cross water.

Wasp or Yellowjacket Trap

One of the most annoying parts of eating and grilling outside is dodging wasps, hornets and similar flying insects who think they are invited to your party! One way to manage this problem is to set a wasp and yellowjacket trap a short distance from the area where you’re gathering. The wasps go there instead of your picnic area—once they enter the bag they can’t get out. Make sure you get a wasp trap that doesn’t attract beneficial honeybees. There are also similarly designed outdoor fly traps if you don’t want them bothering you while you eat.

Bee Repellent Sprays

For the most part, bees are our friends. They pollinate our plants and give us delicious honey. But they aren’t always welcome at outdoor barbecues and picnics. Experts say that the best way to repel bees is to spray the area with a bee repellent spray. Citronella candles are also helpful in keeping them at bay.

When you’re grilling this spring and summer, use these simple tips to protect your food from annoying insects who don’t want to leave you and your guests alone. Once you eliminate this problem, you can relax knowing that everyone is having a relaxed and enjoyable time eating outdoors.
