My First Organic Garden: Tips, Pics & Motivation for the First Time Vegetable Gardener

March 19, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com 1 Comment

When I was a young girl my father had a huge backyard garden. I didn’t understand the big appeal of the garden back then, mostly because I had to spend so many weekends in the hot sun helping to pull weeds! My Dad always had a great yield of tomatoes, cucumbers and other delicious greens.

One day last year on a whim, I decided to start my own little vegetable garden. I wanted to do something outdoors so that I would have more of an excuse to enjoy the sunshine instead of staying inside all of the time in front of a computer screen. I knew absolutely nothing about gardening, so I winged it mostly.

This began my love of gardening. Although I started planting VERY late in the season (the last week of July) I got the most beautiful yield of cucumbers, greens, buttercrunch lettuce and carrots. I am now excited about the prospect of starting another one when the weather is just right.

So if you are even remotely interested in gardening as a first-timer, here are the steps I took to get mine started. I may not be an expert just yet, and am still studying the best methods, but this is what worked for me. If you’re a first time organic gardener, just start small with a garden sized at about 5′ x 8′ — you can always expand it later.
Things you’ll need:

– an area of land that gets plenty of direct sunlight
– organic soil in a bag
– garden tools (including a good rake)
– soil sifter (keep reading for more on that)
– heirloom garden seed pack
– long wooden planks
– garden fence (green plastic)
– tall spikes
– staple gun
– fish fertilizer or sea kelp fertilizer or both (organic)
– garden feeder that can be attached to a hose (you can use the Miracle Gro feeder but dump the blue stuff inside first and clean it).
– a positive attitude

1. Prepare the soil.
The best preparation for good work tomorrow is to do good work today.
– Elbert Hubbard
startThe first and probably most time consuming step for me was preparing the soil and the area of the garden. I purchased a few bags of organic garden soil and one bag of miracle gro soil (whether or not a garden can still be considered 100% organic when using a Miracle Gro product is up for debate–I used the soil in a bag but not the chemical fertilizer that they sell).

sifter2The next thing I had to do was sift the soil to get rid of all the rocks and pebbles. This took a while and plenty of elbow grease. I was amazed to learn that my local home improvement stores did not have a sifting machine or tool in stock, so I had to fashion one by attaching mesh wire to two pieces of wood (I’ve since learned that there are a few options available online). I attached this primitive tool to the top of a wheelbarrow, scooped dirt on top and sifted it by hand. This took about two days to complete. I just put my gardening hat on, put my headphones on, turned on a good audiobook and got to work.

Much like life, you can’t have consistent growth without a proper foundation. So I knew this soil had to be just right.

Good soilAfter I finished sifting the dirt, I had the cleanest, smoothest patch of soil I had ever seen. The hard work was worth it. It was silky smooth, loose and fell right through my hands. (Keep in mind that if it rains you should cover the area unless you want to wait days for the soil to dry again.)

Next, I added the soil I purchased from my home improvement store to the silky soil and mixed it all together thoroughly with a garden rake. It looked fresh, dark and ready for planting.

The next step was to cordon off the area so that it was a well-defined garden. I purchased large cut wooden planks from Home Depot and hammered them into the ground around the garden. I also purchased green plastic garden fencing (comes in a roll at the store) and spikes to use later on to protect the garden from small animals. I also used the rocks I sifted from the soil as decoration around the garden area.

2. Planting the seeds.

Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
start2After adding the wooden planks around the garden I knew it was time for planting seeds. I purchased an heirloom seed pack from Amazon, which I highly recommend. They’re called “survival seeds” because you can harvest and replant them over and over into eternity (non-GMO). The pack I bought has a wide variety of vegetable seeds including carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, onions, cilantro, broccoli and more. I drew a plan on a piece of paper and divided the area of the garden into clearly defined sections. I followed the directions on each seed pack, being careful to leave plenty of space between each line of seeds. I then used my hands to carefully cover up each line of seeds with my hands.

3. Bless the garden.

When you focus on being a blessing, God makes sure that you are always blessed in abundance.
– Joel Osteen
Some may think this step isn’t necessary, but I personally think it was crucial to the success of my little garden — especially being that I started planting seeds so late in the summer. I asked Divine Providence and my late, beloved father (who had recently passed) to watch over my garden. I thought positive thoughts about my garden and imagined all of the delicious, healthy vegetables it would grow.

4. Water and wait.

Gardening requires lots of water — most of it in the form of perspiration. – Lou Erickson
The next step is to water your newly planted garden daily and wait. I set up an automatic timer to run the water twice per day over my garden, I believe it was once in the morning and once in the afternoon for about 45 minutes or longer. It took just a week for me to start seeing pretty little green sprouts and I was so excited! Only weeks later I had some plants that were ready for harvesting (namely the buttercrunch lettuce and greens).

5. Protect your garden.

A blessing is a circle of light drawn around a person to protect, heal and strengthen.
– John O’Donohue
sprouts
Once you start to see plant life growing in your organic garden it’s time to add your garden fence around it. Add tall spikes at all corners and at the mid-points, then wrap it with the green plastic fencing. Staple the fencing to your wooden planks and use string to tie it to each spike.

sprouts2

It’s also a good idea to have some type of natural protectant from flying and crawling pests for your garden. I purchased Neem oil (bugs don’t like it) and added a few droppers full to a spray bottle of water. Just shake it up and spray it on your garden regularly to keep the bugs away. I also put baking soda on the ground around my lettuce and cucumbers when I saw that snails were crawling in and munching on the leaves. It’s supposed to help keep those types of bugs away.

garden3

If you really want to keep all sorts of animals away from your garden, there’s a product sold in stores that smells like fox urine. It has to be applied in certain areas of the yard to ward off woodland creatures — just follow the instructions perfectly. I didn’t use it, but that’s up to you and what you feel is necessary.

6. Feed it and love it.

It is not how much you do, but how much love you put in the doing.”
– Mother Teresa
Organic fertilizerYou’re ideally supposed to feed your growing garden at least once per week. I was dedicated to keeping my garden organic, so I researched natural plant food. I purchased Fish fertilizer and Sea Kelp fertilizer for my garden. There’s also a product that combines the two. Every week, I filled up my spray bottle (it attaches to a hose) with a mixture of the two products and fed my garden while humming a tune or listening to my audiobooks. I loved every bit of it. I loved my garden and I believe that is why it grew so beautifully.

7. Harvest and enjoy.

With every deed you are sowing a seed, though the harvest you may not see.
– Ella Wheeler Wilcox
first cucumberThe last and possibly most satisfying step of growing your first organic vegetable garden is enjoying the fruits. I was so excited when my first cucumber appeared — it seemed to have grown overnight, which I have since learned is common with cucumbers. It was so fresh and delicious.

Then came the first orange carrots — crisp and sweet. I had plenty of lettuce Organic carrotto use in my salads and greens to make with meals during the week. I call it “healing food” because it is so rich in healthy vitamins, nutrients and love that you put in it. Soak the veggies and wash them very good before eating. There were also instructions on my seed pack for how to save the seeds for future planting.

green2I hope that this fairly long article has helped you get motivated to start your very own first time organic garden. I can’t believe I waited until now to get started — gardening is so rewarding. I don’t know why, but for some reason I never thought that I could ever grow my own vegetables. That’s nonsense — anyone with patience and the right tools can have a green thumb. It was a learning experience on so many levels and a testament to how changing our thoughts can change our lives for the better. Gardening gives me peace and serenity. It also gives me something special to look forward to each day.

May you be encouraged to start your first organic garden in your backyard or a community garden this spring or summer. Happy planting!

How I Fell in Love with Audiobooks

March 14, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

As a Generation X person, I am doing my best to stay up to date with today’s advancing technology.  I realize that if I don’t, it may be harder to catch up later on.  So my latest tech endeavor was to learn more about how to use audiobooks on my phone and computer instead of buying books.  After getting familiar with the Audible.com site, I found that modern audiobooks are a very affordable and useable way to get motivation, inspiration and entertainment on a daily basis.

My First Audiobook

My first audiobook purchase was a crime drama novel.  It was about 3 hours long and kept my attention.  I quickly realized that the narrator’s voice was important to assisting my imagination.  When I am listening to a book, I like to let my imagination run wild to create what I think is happening in each scene, and what the characters look like.

Multitasking while “Reading”

The next benefit that I found about audiobooks is that they allowed me to Listening to Audiobookmulti-task.  I could do other things while listening, whereas with a paperback I have to stop everything and focus on the pages. For instance, I can listen to an audio book on my phone using the Audible app on my daily journey to work or during a workout.  It helps me to relax while in traffic or while in the presence of others.  When I get home, I can listen to the book while I prepare my dinner.  And of course, now my absolute favorite pastime on weekends is to listen to my book while I tidy up my house.

A Break for the Eyes

headphonesThe third thing that attracted me to audiobooks is that it gives my eyes a rest. I find that after working and staring at a computer for eight hours, my eyes are so tired of focusing.  With an audio version, I now just get comfortable on my sofa, put on a pair of headphones, close my eyes and enjoy the story.  It really helps me to unwind after a difficult or stressing day at work.

Instant Gift Idea

Audiobooks also make great last minute gifts. You can either send a membership to someone who really enjoys reading novels or inspirational and motivational books, or you can pick one book that they’ll like and send it to them instantly (when checking out, just click “buy for a friend.”)  The Audible site allows you to send the gift via email so that the recipient can download and listen to the book instantly. With a paperback version she would have to wait days or even weeks to get the gift.

I’ve learned that I can save a lot of money and time by simply sending the people I love audiobooks as gifts, which makes my life a lot easier around the holidays. The trick is finding a book title that they will really love.

In summary, I most definitely recommend learning how to use audiobooks on Audible.  It has brought relaxation to my daily routine.  It’s simple to use and can be enjoyed with ease by readers of all ages.

3 Great Short Motivational Books to Keep on Your Nightstand

March 7, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

I am always on the look out for motivational books and speeches that can inspire me to succeed in life. I am very open to positive inspiration and advice about my career and in my relationships.  Here are three great short motivational books that you can keep on your nightstand or tuck into your purse while traveling.

1) If Life Is A Game, These are The Rules By Cherie Carter-Scott
indexI first found this book in the library. It was so on point and hit home. The premise is that there are rules of life, and when we’re out of sync with those rules, we have hard times. Each chapter made me think of my past mistakes and how I have the power to choose to stop making the same mistakes over and over again.  This book will inspire readers and teach them how to live life to the fullest.  It will forever be on my coffee table. Available in paperback at Amazon.

2) Why Doesn’t He Love Me? By L. Lynn Gilliard
51ALzlDK43L._SL500_AA300_PIaudible,BottomRight,13,73_AA300_This book is the most logical and thought-provoking little motivational book (I listened to the audio version) that I’ve read in recent times. We all grow up with preconceived ideas about what the “perfect” life should be — careers, love relationships and friends.  I learned by reading this book that we are totally in control of our experiences and the people that we allow to enter our lives.  Choosing the most positive, genuine and loyal people to exist in your life is a major key to having a happy life.  However, it’s most important to learn how to enjoy your own company.  I’ve already started to spread word about this book to friends and family.  It’s a book that you will read and reread to reaffirm the positive messages. Available in audio and paperback.

3) Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff By Richard Carlson P.H.D
smallstuffI enjoyed reading this book because I have always been told that I tend to overreact and take things to seriously or literally.  I learned from reading this book that life is too short to over analyze life’s everyday occurrences.  This is the type of book that you digest in little bites — one chapter every night before bed. I will absolutely, always remember the lessons learned from this book. Available as a paperback.

3 Natural Products to Boost Your Energy

February 20, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Every winter I always need a boost of energy to combat the depressive scenes of winter — I think they call it the “winter blues” because you don’t get enough sunshine.  So, I went on a hunt to find a healthy, non-caffeinated and all natural way to boost your energy. Here’s what I found:

Green Superfood Powder

81KLsPo0kiL._SL1500_The first product that I found was a raw organic green Superfood Powder.  It can be put into your daily smoothie or just mixed in with water.  It includes vitamins, minerals, probiotics and anti-oxidants to help improve low energy levels.  An added bonus is the 100% money back guarantee if it doesn’t quite do the job.

Natural B-12 Liquid Shot

71FUd1jPjtL._SL1500_Another way to increase your energy is a natural B-12 shot in liquid form.  I have often heard of doctors and nurses that work long shifts using B-12 to boost their energy levels.  I was really impressed with the natural, quality ingredients used in this product.

Oxygen in a Can

31nwFc5CPfL.AA300_PIbundle-5,TopRight,0,0_AA300_SH20_The third natural energy boost that I found was oxygen in a can that helps boost energy.  This is a new idea — never heard of this solution! The brain needs oxygen to function properly. Sometimes it’s deprived due to diet and other factors, causing mental fatigue. So giving it an extra shot can help give you more mental awareness. It’s not cheap, but it seems that purchasing the oxygen booster in a 5 pack is more affordable — especially when you compare it to the cost of visiting a new age oxygen bar.  The product I found contains 95% pure oxygen.

As a writer, I know how difficult it can be to get motivated. Hopefully one of these ways to boost your energy will help you achieve your goals!

Have a Meaningful Valentine’s Day for Under $200

February 10, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Here is a concept for a special and meaningful Valentine’s day with your love without breaking the bank. Everything suggested here will cost under $200 for both of you!

Step 1: Book a Hotel $100

This is the most expensive but most important part of your meaningful Valentine’s day by far: book one night in a hotel room. There’s something that’s just delightful about spending a night at a hotel instead of in your usual room or apartment.

There are now hotel booking apps that offer last minute deals, like Hotel Tonight. It’s so easy to find a room for $100 or less (even on V-Day). In fact, some sites offer special discounts for Valentine’s and other holidays at discreet but beautiful hotels.

With the Hotel Tonight app, you’ll receive $25 for signing up when you use the code NNONE9, so you just might find a hotel room for well under $100 including tax.

Step 2: The Decorations $25

Check in time for your hotel room will be around 3pm. Get there about an hour before that and try to check in early so that you’ll have more than enough time to decorate your room for your love. Keep it simple:

  • 4 red balloons (two tied to either side of the hotel bed)
  • A red comforter or satin sheet (if the hotel can’t provide, bring one of your own!)
  • A red table cloth or runner (you can find these at the Dollar store) for your champagne and goodies)
  • Rose petals shaped into a heart somewhere in the room (and some waiting by the bathtub)
  • A wall sticker with a message of love (these can easily be peeled back off in most cases)
  • A CD player or iPod playing soft and romantic, yet meaningful music (something like Beck’s Grammy award winning Morning Phase)
  • If you want to step it up a notch, install a portable bed canopy with a red or white sheer curtain.

Step 3: The Feast $40

There’s no need to order room service and rack up a large bill. Just bring a delicious feast that you can eat on ice or at room temperature. Here are some ideas for a Valentine’s feast in your hotel room:

  • Shrimp cocktail (find a large one at BJs Wholesale Club or Costco)
  • A hero sandwich shaped like a heart (also sometimes available at a wholesale club)
  • Deviled eggs
  • Sushi
  • Box or basket of candy / chocolates or cupcakes for you to share…

1 day shipping

Step 4: The Bath Together $20

One of the most meaningful and special moments you’ll have together on Valentine’s Day is a lovely, warm bubble bath together in your hotel tub. When you’re both fed and satisfied, run a hot bath with relaxing, romantic soap (if your love has sensitive skin, make sure it is the right formula) and sprinkle the rest of your petals on top. Light a fragrant candle on a safe place on the sink and enjoy. Take this time to tell each other something that will bring you even closer. For example:

  • What was the moment that you knew you loved this person?
  • What were you thinking about each other when you first met?
  • What is your favorite thing about your beloved?

Everything that happens after this point is up to you! Leave any and all negativity at the hotel desk. Have fun, be safe and love one another!

Looking for My Loved One: the Top 3 Questions on Your Mind

January 9, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

The top three things on your mind when you’re looking for someone you haven’t seen in years.

Thanks to Facebook and locator services, people all over the world are reunited with their long lost daughters, sons, sisters, moms, brothers, fathers and friends. It got me to thinking about what must be going through the minds of these family members as they are going through this heart wrenching process.

Here are the top three thoughts that are probably on your mind if you are looking for family or friends.

What Do They Look Like?

When you haven’t seen someone for a long while, or at all since birth in the case of a mother who gave her child away at birth, the top question on your mind will most likely be “What will they look like??” Will they be tall? Short? Brunette or blonde? Will they be in shape or will they be severely overweight?

But truth be told, it doesn’t really matter how they look when you are finally reunited with someone who you haven’t seen for years, decades or more. You are just happy to have them back in your life.

What Have They Been Doing with Their Life?

We all pray that our long lost family and friends are doing well for themselves. If you found out that they weren’t doing so well, you might start to blame yourself for that, even if your absence in their lives had absolutely nothing to do with their current circumstances. But regardless, we want to know how they’re doing, and if possible how we can help.

Will They Like Me?

The final question that is high on the minds of a person who is looking for a long lost family member or friends is “Will they like me?” Will I get along with this person who I haven’t seen for ten years (or have never seen in some cases).

I imagine that not every reunion turns out to be a match made in heaven. For example, some brothers and sisters are like oil and water — they just don’t go together. Some mothers may turn out to be the “judgmental” type and annoy the heck out of their newly found children. There is really nothing you can do to make someone get along with you. The tone of any relationship is usually established within the first few meetings.

If you are looking for family members and friends, or on the cusp of meeting a long lost family member, or even just fantasizing about what it would be like to see them again, try not drive yourself crazy with hypotheticals and don’t be disappointed if they don’t live up to your initial expectations. It takes time to get to know someone new — even if they are related to you.

Blessings to you in your search!
