4 Ways to Better Manage Your Depression

July 2, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Depression is a very serious issue that can negatively affect a person’s life in a number of ways. It can have negative effects on both the mind and body. You may feel tired, sad, lacking energy and sometimes like life doesn’t have much meaning. If you’re having a chronic problem with how to manage your depression, of course the first course of action is to seek the help of a professional because in some cases it can be the result of a chemical imbalance, hormonal issues or even heredity.

Manage Your Depression

However, depressive disorder is also often caused by outside forces, like stressful life events and eating bad foods, so a holistic and natural approach to managing this condition may help as well. You can also try implementing a few new stimulating activities into your daily routine to better manage your depression.

Change Your Diet

Did you know that some foods can actually exasperate your feelings of depression? Researchers from the University of Navarra and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canariain in Spain found that eating foods high in trans fats and saturated fats can actually make depression worse.

You may also be missing necessary vitamins and minerals from your diet. Buy a daily pill container and fill it with vitamins, including a multi-vitamin, vitamin C-ester, vitamin D, vitamin B and any others that your doctor says you need for proper nutrition.

Read

When you’re depressed, your mind is unhappy with your current surroundings and situation. So if you’re feeling down, try sending your mind elsewhere for a while by picking up a good book or other type of reading material. Be careful not to read negative things, such as sad news stories, depressing articles and magazines that advertise things you can’t have at the moment; that could depress you even further. Read positive stories of triumph, feel good news and if possible, stories about other people who have overcome depression.

Do Just 5 Minutes of Yoga

The mind-body connection is a very real thing. Sometimes exercising or simply stretching the muscles in your body can help you manage depression. If you aren’t motivated enough to do a full workout, just pause and do about 5-10 minutes of yoga stretches. Here’s a quick beginner’s yoga video you can follow. This one helps energize you. You may be pleasantly surprised by how much better you feel after doing just a bit of yoga. The more you do it, the longer you’ll probably want to do it, but don’t feel pressured. Just take it one day at a time.

Talk to Someone (Or Even to Yourself)

If you have someone in your life that you can confide in, it helps to tell them what you’re going through. Sometimes just getting your feelings out can help relieve negative tension. It’s not wise to keep all of those depressed and repressed feelings bottled up for long stretches of time. If you don’t have someone else to talk to, sometimes talking through it with yourself (or a Higher Power that you believe in) each day is just as effective. And of course, talking to a qualified therapist who understands depressive disorders is also a good idea.

If you’re suffering from depression, you certainly aren’t alone. Even high profile celebrities with lots of money and fame, who seem to have great lives, report that they have experienced bouts of depression. Try changing up your routine, lifestyle and diet to manage your depression and overcome those negative feelings. It’s also important to seek the counsel of a trusted professional if it gets worse — talking to someone who understands what you’re going through can really help you get some relief and see things in a more positive light.

How to Cope With a Traumatizing Loss of a Loved One

July 18, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Many of us have had the unfortunate experience of losing a loved one. Whether it be a parent, sibling, niece, nephew or pet, there is inner pain that hurts to the core of your soul. The problem one faces when mourning is, how do you restart your life pain free? Meaning, when is it alright to have fun, feel good again, smile or laugh?

Experts say that there are five stages to the grieving process when there is a loss:

1- Denial/Isolation
2- Anger
3- Bargaining
4- Depression
5- Acceptance

The first stage is explained as a temporary response during the onset of the death, that is said to be a normal defense mechanism for all. Personally, I believe that to isolate yourself will only worsen the depression that a person feels, so try not to spend too much time alone. Just find a person that cares for you to sit with you even if you sit in silence. It may even help to go to a church or other place where you feel comfortable and welcome to be around others.

The second stage is when your anger is misplaced and directed towards family, strangers or on the deceased. What helped me not have anger towards anyone was the fact that I was surrounded by nothing but love. So if you are surrounded by negativity, remove yourself from their misguided energy and remain near people who are positive.

The third stage is generally when you begin to question if there was anything you could have or should have done to prevent the death. To me, it is a normal behavior to have. Following my own family loss, I instead remained focused on the love that I felt for the departed my entire life. It helped to ease the pain.

The fourth stage is when you experience sadness and regret. Sadness, is an emotion that no one enjoys. Yet, it was a vital part of my healing process. I felt more saddened by not being able to visit my loved one again alive and regretted the fact that I felt the death was sudden.

The fifth and final stage is where you begin to heal and move forward with life. This can take weeks, months or even years to happen completely.

Since every person’s emotional wellness during the grieving process is different, I don’t know if all people experience all five stages in that order. I myself, did not, but I was witness to other family members going through all five stages in order. I believe the relationship that each specific person had with the departed tells how a person will mourn.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one definitely isn’t easy. I think the most important aspect to remember is that the memories of the loved one will never fade. When you are able to experience a positive memory and laugh is when I feel that the recovery process begins.

It’s important to realize that no one is immortal — we have to appreciate and love life to its fullest while we’re here. This is the message that a deceased loved one would probably want to share with family and friends if it were possible.

BIG HUG

Ways to Get Out of a Slump

June 28, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

We all have bad days. At times, we face a period of days or weeks that get the best of us. For myself, a knee injury set me back and put me in a slump for a couple of months. I struggled but have found a few ways to get back to feeling like myself again.

Try Switching to Healthier Food Options
If you drink coffee with cream and sugar daily, like I did. Stop!! Instead, try drinking a hot cup of green tea with no additives. Green tea is full of antioxidants that does your body well. Also, give a smoothie or protein shake a try, rather than a breakfast bagel. For lunch, ditch the fast food menus. Try cooking at home a healthy, grilled chicken salad with a vinegar based dressing. As for dinner, switch from eating pasta to enjoying grilled fish with steamed veggies of your choice. By me making these simple adjustments to my eating habits, I felt re-energized and motivated to get out of my slump.

Drink Lots of Water
If you are a daily soda drinker, swap to a flavored seltzer water instead. The seltzer water gives you that same burst of carbonation as does soda but with no empty calories. In between drinking seltzer try consuming 8 glasses of water, daily. When your body is properly hydrated, you should automatically start to feel better. It is also, excellent for your digestive system. Your skin will look and feel better, too.

Get Some Fresh Air And Exercise
Simply taking a walk can be a mood enhancer. It releases the “feel good” endorphins in your brain. In the morning or after dinner, go for a twenty minute walk, for starters. If you are able to have a friend, pet or partner to walk with you and enjoy the fresh air, it would be beneficial. By walking with others, holds you accountable to someone other than yourself. If there is no one available to walk with you, walk by yourself. Using an MP3 player to listen to music, with one earpiece in (for safety) can be very relaxing while walking.

I did exactly what I wrote about and feel great. It was challenging at first, yet, overall the results are outstanding. My mood has changed and it has helped me to get out of my slump. I hope these tips helps someone to get out of their slump, as well.
