Create a Cozy and Comfortable Dining Area in 5 Easy Steps

December 20, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

The dining area of a house is often a neglected area of the home, even when cleaning your home. It is so simple to arrange that you barely think about it when planning the home’s decor. After all, what does it really need? A table and a few chairs. Sounds simple enough, so that’s why many people don’t spare a second thought when organising it.

Here you’ll find a few simple tips for creating a cozy and comfortable dining area. These changes might not seem like they’re making a big difference at first, but when you and your family or your guests sit down for a nice dinner in your dining room you’ll notice that it feels much homier and more inviting.

  1. Use lighting to set the mood.

Lighting helps sets the mood for a good dinner. For instance, if you’re having a nice family dinner, you want standard room lighting (about 60 watts incandescent, and 13 watts for an energy efficient fluorescent bulb), but if you are having a romantic dinner, you’ll need a dimmer incandescent bulb of about 25 watts. If you’re having a dinner party gathering with friends, go for a brighter light to help keep the room energetic. (Tip: you might want to hire someone to clean your carpet before inviting guests over under a really bright light!)

  1. Add cushions.

Don’t immediately assume that your chairs are comfortable for everyone. Add a sitting cushion to every chair. You might even buy a seat cushion that has both a back and bottom for the ultimate comfort.

  1. Experiment with tableware.

The tableware you use in your dining room can really make your dining area look inviting and attractive. Buy a few different table sets and take out new pieces for every special dinner. Mix and match your tableware (including utensils, plates and napkins) to create interesting combinations.

  1. Make a few quirky changes.

Add decorations to your dining area that will add to the mood. Try a heavily scented seasonal candle, or a flower pot with an exotic flower as the centerpiece on your table. Make thematic changes in the décor when you are inviting friends in and make use of all the décor-related gifts you have ever received from them. The items you add to your dining room will probably be conversation starters.

  1. Experiment with different table covers.

Your table covering is like a canvas for your dining area. Choose table cloths of varying styles, designs and colors to complement the room’s décor. Choose your table coverings depending on the holiday or time of year—for instance, for Thanksgiving you might get a tablecloth designed with leaves or cornucopias.

The next time you get your home and carpet cleaned, use these five easy tips to re-organize your dining area in time for your next big dinner with family or friends.

Spring Cleaning Ideas and Motivation

April 25, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

When the somber days of winter finally vanish and spring has sprung, it’s the perfect time to start taking on simple projects that won’t break your bank and improve your home. Here are some ideas to get you motivated to do some spring cleaning.

Open Up the Windows

Let the fresh air in.  Nothing will get you more in the mood to clean than smelling the fresh air from outside coming into your home. Play a little of your favorite motivational music or an audiobook to get your energy flowing.

Dust First

Plenty of dust has likely accumulated in your house throughout the cold winter season. Grab a dust buster or Swiffer and dust off your shelves, lamps and knick knacks to start.

The Floors

Your floors are your foundation, so that’s the next detail to take care of. Vacuum and mop all of the floors in your home. This is also a great time of year to rent a rug shampooer from your local supermarket and shampoo all carpets throughout your house.

Linens

Changing the curtains and bed linens in all rooms will rejuvenate the appearance in your home.  Remove the dark winter colors and replace them with the cheerful colors of spring, such as vibrant yellows, oranges and shades of pink.  You may find it easier to purchase a duvet that incorporates all of the colors of spring to cheer up your bedroom. You may also want to add bright and colorful throw pillows on the bed and the sofa in your living room to add springtime pops of color.

Flower Time

Adorn your home with planted flowers or flowers in vases to bring in the spring season.  Remember that some flowers need full daylight, near a window while others can be placed wherever you like.  Try a potted sunflower in the kitchen so that every time you go in for breakfast you’re met with its beauty and fresh scent.  Place flowers on the coffee table and end tables in your living room.  Make sure to choose flowers that blend well with your color scheme.

Your Front Door or Porch

Remember to do some spring cleaning on the outdoors as well. Sweep your stoop or porch thoroughly. Wash your front and back windows. The front porch is a great place to hang ferns to beautify your entrance. They will make your entrance more welcoming to you and your guests. If you are an apartment dweller, you can make a lovely floral wreath to hang on your front door.

When you hear the birds chirping and begin to smell the fresh scents of spring, you’ll probably get all the motivation you need for spring cleaning. Start with these simple ideas and add additional projects to your list as you go along.
