Things That Are Making Your Home Look Dated (And How to Update Them)

September 29, 2017 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

When you move into a home that has been around for over 30 years, it’s normal for it to have some features that look dated. If you take a closer look, you’ll find that there are probably a few specific things around the house that are making the home look old-fashioned. Here are a few things to look out for if you want to modernize your home. You can overcome some of these issues yourself—just add them to your do-it-yourself project list.

Old-School Kitchen Cabinets

One of the first places to check for dated features in your home is the kitchen. Worn down cabinets with frayed edges that are made of plywood or an inferior grade of wood should be replaced if you want the home to look more modern. You don’t have to do an entire kitchen remodel to rectify this problem—just update the cabinets for now.

Peeling, Chipped Paint

After years of adding new layers of paint to your walls and ceilings, eventually the paint will begin to chip. Chipped away paint will make your rooms look old and unfinished. Peeling paint on the exterior of a home is also a sign of an aging home. You’ll either need to sand down the chipped areas and repaint them or completely remove the paint from your surface and start anew. However, keep in mind that older homes may contain paint that was made with lead, so it’s not always advisable to sand layers of paint for health reasons.

Old-Fashioned Wallpaper

Designer wallpaper can be a beautiful addition to a room, but keeping old-fashioned, floral wallpaper in a room, especially the kitchen, will make it look outmoded. This is especially true if the wallpaper has browned or looks dirty. Clean, smooth, painted walls will instantly make a room look more modern. If you insist on wallpaper, choose bold prints that have a clearly defined solid background color. Here is how the rooms in a more modern home look (bright colors, painted, clean):

Unfinished or Painted Wood Floors

One common trait of older homes is unfinished wood floors. To make them look more attractive, homeowners of the past often painted them. Sanding the floors, staining them, and finishing them with a polyurethane coating will help bring old wood floors up to date. If the floor boards are beyond repair, laminate wood flooring will cover up the problem.

Air Conditioners Hanging Out of Windows

Nothing makes the exterior of a home look dated quite like multiple air conditioners hanging out of the windows. Over time, the back of air conditioners become dirty and start to drip fluids. If you want your home to look and feel more modern, invest in a cooling system that will manage the temperature throughout your house from one central unit. For a more affordable fix, place portable ACs in your rooms–

Aging Wooden Window Frames

In the past, the standard for homes was wooden window frames. The frames were crudely nailed together and mounted with glass panes. Over time these frames begin to chip, crack, and allow drafts to come into the home. One easy way to update a dated home is to have the windows upgraded to vinyl. Vinyl replacement windows are the new standard for homes and they are relatively easy to install.

Popcorn Ceilings

A mildly textured ceiling can be attractive, but a “popcorn” texture should be avoided if you want your rooms to look modern. Popcorn ceilings have a bumpy, pilled surface. This texture was popular in homes built as early as the 1930s. Not only do they make the room look older, they can also make it look smaller and feel less comfortable. Remove the texture and paint your ceilings with a high gloss paint for a more modern look.

Linoleum Flooring in the Kitchen or Bathroom

Linoleum flooring is easy to install and relatively attractive, which is why so many homeowners opt for it. But some of the patterns can make a kitchen or bathroom look older than it really is. Also, over time linoleum will begin to peel around the edges of the room and get scratched or scuffed by foot traffic. For a more modern kitchen, go for durable stone tile or laminate flooring.

Dated Lighting Fixtures

Antique, old-fashioned lighting fixtures around your home can make it look dated. This includes milk glass globes and ceramic flush mount ceiling fixtures. Replacing fixtures, which sometimes takes just a few minutes, can significantly modernize your rooms. Opt for brass wall sconces, recessed lights, and hanging pendant lights.  Use stylish lamps in bedrooms and living areas. Also, consider installing track lights in rooms where you often entertain guests. Here’s an idea for a more modern light fixture:

Doors and Doorknobs

modern doors

A clear sign of an older house is the quality, material, and design of the doors throughout. Consider replacing a single door with double doors where appropriate. Go for a solid wood or brightly painted door over fiberglass, steel, or aluminum. Replace plain wood slab doors with hand-crafted doors. You can also upgrade a door by simply changing the doorknob. Levers and key-entry locks are preferable to standard knob styles if you want a more modern looking home.

Once you take care of these issues that may be making your home look dated, you’ll probably have more of an eye for how to modernize your home. Time to get to work!

Easy Fall Yard Decorating Tips

September 21, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

It’s no wonder why fall is a favorite season for many people. The weather is still somewhat warm, but breezy and the sun is still shining. This is the perfect time to really enjoy your outdoor yard area. Here are some easy fall yard decorating tips that will allow you to transform your yard into an inviting and relaxing space for yourself and your friends.

Fall Yard

Outdoor Seating

There is nothing more disappointing than sitting outdoors on a chair that is not comfortable. Invest in Adirondack style chairs for the fall. These chairs are so comfortable that cushions are not really required. Find a chair that has a matching ottoman or pair it with a different foot stool.

Adirondack Chairs

Arranging Chairs for Guests

The seating arrangement is key to creating an inviting atmosphere that encourages group conversations. So if you plan to have friends over this fall, arrange your seats in a tight arch or circle to ensure that your guests feel connected and engaged with one another. You can look forward to an evening of laughter and conversation.

Fire Pit

Now, to make accommodations for the chilly nights, simply add a fire pit to the center of your circle. You can get a fire pit on Amazon for about $50. This will provide much needed heat for you and your guests. You can even roast marshmallows and hot dogs, on a stick found within your yard, for a camp like experience. Just make sure you follow all safety instructions before and after lighting the fire pit.

Bug Protection

To make you and your guests even more comfortable in your yard this fall, purchase pumpkin scented citronella candles to keep unwanted bugs at bay. Light these candles at least thirty minutes before your guests arrive for the best results (and aroma). Remember to extinguish the candles at the end of the night so that they’ll be good for future use.

Hanging Deck Lights

If you have a deck, decorate it for those fall evenings with icicle lights. These are holiday lights with strings that hang down like icicles. Look for white or orange lights to create a really delightful atmosphere after dark. Also, get yourself a beautiful pumpkin for the season and arrange it near your seating area in a bed of leaves (you’ll probably have plenty of those available).

Icicle Lights

Your outdoor space can become the most relaxing area of your home with a few tweaks. It is great for star gazing, whether you’re alone or with others. You can even transform your backyard into a place for a romantic autumn evening with that special someone.

Get started on these easy fall yard decorating tips and have fun this fall!

Create a Fun and Inspiring Kids Bedroom (Under $500)

April 16, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

A good friend of mine came to me with a home designing dilemma. She needed to affordably transition her child’s bedroom to the “next level.”  She had a toddler’s bed in the room, which the child outgrew. She had a few requirements for upgrading her child’s bedroom:

– it has to be a room that a child can enjoy for years to come (that way it doesn’t have to be upgraded again for a while)

– it has to be capable of entertaining play dates and sleepovers

– it has to be inspiring and spark the child’s imagination

– the update has to be affordable ($500 or less)

– the new bedroom must be able to handle the wear and tear of a growing child

– the bedroom must create an atmosphere of fun, excitement and inspiration for a child

These are all common requests of parents with transitioning toddlers and growing school-aged children. You want them to have a fun but also inspiring place to sleep. Here are a few furniture and decor ideas for creating a fun kid’s bedroom.

Fun Time Bed!

Tent and Slide Bed for KidsIf you’re looking for a bedroom that your “rough and tumble” child will absolutely love, then this fun-time tent bed for kids is it. It’s a colorful coaster bunk bed with a slide, a tent and plenty of places to hide. It would be the perfect addition to a child’s “dream room.” Imagine sliding down the slide in the morning and having meals in the tent. Any child would look forward to bed time if this was in their room! You also save space, because the play area and bed are combined.

Here’s a second, more conservative option if you like the idea of a tent-slide bed for your child’s room, but want it to look modern.
Night Light Lamp

Doggie Night LightMost young children prefer to sleep with a night light on. Upgrade your child’s bedroom and give him or her some extra comfort with this cute night light lamp that’s also a wallpaper sticker. The lamp is shaped like a doggie’s head, so when he lights up at night your child can see a friendly face shining on the wall. The cord that goes into the outlet looks like the dog’s leash!

Star Gazing

Les Brown famously said “Shoot for the moon, because even if you miss you’ll land amongst the stars.”

Do you remember those long nights as a child spent staring up at the ceiling, thinking and trying not to fall asleep? When your child is in bed at night and looks up at the ceiling, let him or her see “the stars.” Add these glow in the dark star stickers to the ceiling to help inspire your child and ensure that he or she has sweet dreams.

Have fun creating a fun and inspiring kids bedroom for your child!

3 Simple Ideas to Spruce Up Your Living Room

March 21, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Every spring I like to spruce up my home by adding pops of color and new furniture that has sleek and useful designs. Just adding a new lamp, chair or table can completely change the look of your room. Here are a few key pieces that I believe will add class and style to any living room’s decor.

Cappuccino Round Accent TableCappuccino Table

I love the modern design of this cappuccino table.  It will fit in perfectly in a living room where you already have plenty of furniture.  It provides an extra table to place your laptop, iPad, coffee cup or book during hours of leisure.  You can even place the table in an open corner and adorn it with a lovely bouquet of flowers.

Cylinder Shaped Lamp

Cylinder LampI really like the cylinder shape of this lamp because it is small enough to fit into any corner.  It is tall and sleek.  You can even add colored bulbs for a more interesting night time effect in your living room.  It’s affordable enough to purchase two or three to position around your room.

Yellow Zig Zag (Charlie Brown) Throw Pillows

Yellow Zig Zag PillowsIf you need a pop of color in your living room, try these yellow throw pillows. They’re designed with an attractive zig zag pattern that looks similar to Charlie Brown’s shirt! Yellow is the color of happiness, so if you want to brighten up the atmosphere these are a good choice.  You can even transition the pillows to your outdoor patio furniture and with the UV protection on the fabric, you don’t have to worry about the fabric fading.
Consider these simple ideas to spruce up your living room. The goal is to have a place where you can feel relaxed and joyful, and have everything at your fingertips.

Walls Decor Ideas for a Small Urban Apartment

March 14, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

If you happen to live in a major metropolitan city, you will quickly realize how limited your living space is compared to living in a rural community or in a suburb.  When you decorate a small space you should always add a bit of urban “zest.” But you should also add a bit of the “country” for peaceful/zen decor that helps to balance out your space.

A Quick Note About Your Paint
The first thing you’ll do before your furniture arrives is to paint the walls.  Make sure that you choose colors that are not too dark.  Dark colored walls make any room look smaller.  Try to pick colors that blend well from one room to the next.  Create a sense of unity in the apartment.

The Living Room
Plant Wall Hanging UnitAs for your living room, you can add a bit of a natural look to the room by purchasing a magnetic hanging unit.  This is an awesome new product that allows you to grow plants from a white decorative pot that sticks to your wall.  You can display just about any type of foliage,so make sure you choose plants that have some of your favorite colors in them.  This hanging unit will save you floor space and bring attention from company straight to the plants that you love and care for.  Hanging plants high on a wall is also a great idea if you have pets — the plants can grow and thrive indoors out of their reach.

The Kitchen
You should always have a kitchen that feels “inviting”.  You and your guests should feel comfortable and warm while enjoying a cup of coffee together.  Try lime and coconut colors to create the perfect atmosphere.  If you happen to have a small and awkward shaped kitchen, choose bistro style furniture.  Also, hang a few pictures that you would enjoy seeing in your favorite cafe, like coffee cups or fine art.

The Bathroom
Beach Scene DecalIn your bathroom, adding a beach scene or theme will bring a smile to your face each morning.  Since you visit your bathroom so much during the day, it should bring you back to your most pleasant vacation memories.  Purchase peel and stick beach scene decals online.  You can also apply medium size beach shells to the border of a large mirror above your sink.

Your wall decor ideas for a small urban apartment should reflect your personality and make the rooms seem larger and more inviting.  Start by writing out a plan for the room to be decorated.  Most of all use your imagination when you incorporate colors, patterns and themes.  You should have a enjoyable experience each and every time you decorate.

Have Fun!!!

Have a Meaningful Valentine’s Day for Under $200

February 10, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Here is a concept for a special and meaningful Valentine’s day with your love without breaking the bank. Everything suggested here will cost under $200 for both of you!

Step 1: Book a Hotel $100

This is the most expensive but most important part of your meaningful Valentine’s day by far: book one night in a hotel room. There’s something that’s just delightful about spending a night at a hotel instead of in your usual room or apartment.

There are now hotel booking apps that offer last minute deals, like Hotel Tonight. It’s so easy to find a room for $100 or less (even on V-Day). In fact, some sites offer special discounts for Valentine’s and other holidays at discreet but beautiful hotels.

With the Hotel Tonight app, you’ll receive $25 for signing up when you use the code NNONE9, so you just might find a hotel room for well under $100 including tax.

Step 2: The Decorations $25

Check in time for your hotel room will be around 3pm. Get there about an hour before that and try to check in early so that you’ll have more than enough time to decorate your room for your love. Keep it simple:

  • 4 red balloons (two tied to either side of the hotel bed)
  • A red comforter or satin sheet (if the hotel can’t provide, bring one of your own!)
  • A red table cloth or runner (you can find these at the Dollar store) for your champagne and goodies)
  • Rose petals shaped into a heart somewhere in the room (and some waiting by the bathtub)
  • A wall sticker with a message of love (these can easily be peeled back off in most cases)
  • A CD player or iPod playing soft and romantic, yet meaningful music (something like Beck’s Grammy award winning Morning Phase)
  • If you want to step it up a notch, install a portable bed canopy with a red or white sheer curtain.

Step 3: The Feast $40

There’s no need to order room service and rack up a large bill. Just bring a delicious feast that you can eat on ice or at room temperature. Here are some ideas for a Valentine’s feast in your hotel room:

  • Shrimp cocktail (find a large one at BJs Wholesale Club or Costco)
  • A hero sandwich shaped like a heart (also sometimes available at a wholesale club)
  • Deviled eggs
  • Sushi
  • Box or basket of candy / chocolates or cupcakes for you to share…

1 day shipping

Step 4: The Bath Together $20

One of the most meaningful and special moments you’ll have together on Valentine’s Day is a lovely, warm bubble bath together in your hotel tub. When you’re both fed and satisfied, run a hot bath with relaxing, romantic soap (if your love has sensitive skin, make sure it is the right formula) and sprinkle the rest of your petals on top. Light a fragrant candle on a safe place on the sink and enjoy. Take this time to tell each other something that will bring you even closer. For example:

  • What was the moment that you knew you loved this person?
  • What were you thinking about each other when you first met?
  • What is your favorite thing about your beloved?

Everything that happens after this point is up to you! Leave any and all negativity at the hotel desk. Have fun, be safe and love one another!
