Meaningful, Affordable Last Minute Christmas Gift Ideas

December 21, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

You’ve watched week after week as your friends, family and strangers braved the chilly weather and crowds to take care of their Christmas shopping. Now it’s getting closer to December 25 and you’re officially a last minute shopper! Here are a few affordable last minute Christmas gift ideas for the procrastinators out there:

Dollar Store Care Basket

Who doesn’t love browsing the aisles at the dollar store? Go in there, grab a pretty $1 basket and fill it with a mixture of the following items:

– Spa gear, like foot scrubbers, bath soap and nail clippers.

– Candy and gum (the dollar store has those really great candy boxes for a buck).

– Scented candles and decorative items.

– A nice mug or cup tied with a bow (the bow is also available at the dollar store).

– Useful knickknacks like lighters, pens, mini notebooks and cellphone accessories.

Once you get in the store, you’re going to be overwhelmed with PLENTY of ideas for your dollar store care basket. It’s an affordable gift that will cost you around $20-$25 and be worth every penny. It’s a great idea for a young person who’s at college or someone who has just moved into a new apartment.

Last Minute Christmas Gift Ideas

An Inspirational Audiobook

Inspirational AudiobooksAround the holidays people need a whole lot of inspiration. They are busy, distracted and sometimes stressed about their finances or work. One simple yet very meaningful gift idea is to send someone you love an inspirational audiobook. Amazon has an audiobook service called Audible that allows you give books as gifts electronically. Just click here, redeem your free membership, log into Audible with your Amazon ID and find the title that you want. Press the button on the product page that says “Give As a Gift.” You can also gift someone a membership—scroll down to the bottom of the page at Audible and click the “Gift Center” link.

Fully Loaded Gas Card

If you have a friend who drives a lot, she’ll love you even more than she already does if you buy her a fully loaded gas card. Even if it’s just a $20 card, that is going to make a huge difference to someone who has to spend a lot of money every month on gas. Visit a popular gas station chain to ask about gas gift cards.

A Gift to Promote Good Health

yogiteaMany of us don’t take the vitamin supplements and nutrients that we need for good health simply because we don’t have them in our house. One simple last minute gift idea is a package of vitamins and health supplements (like teas or green powder). Put together a small gift basket containing a multi-vitamin, vitamin C, D, Omega-3 fish oil and other necessary nutrients. Add in health teas like hibiscus and antioxidant rich green tea. Someone who either doesn’t know much about health products or is having health concerns will appreciate this gift, and it may encourage him or her to start new healthy habits in the New Year.

Encourage Their Passion Project

Everyone has a passion project, whether they will openly admit it or not. A passion project is something that you would pursue with great passion and interest, whether it’s painting, writing or traveling the world. Think about what may be your recipient’s passion and then give them a gift that encourages them to pursue it. For instance, if their passion is to travel the world, you might give a gift of a foreign language class, a book about world destinations or an Airbnb gift card toward an international room. If their passion is painting, buy them a couple of canvases and a starter paint set. Your passion project gift can be under $35 and still be priceless.

Meaningful gifts are possible, even if you’re short on time. Use these ideas as inspiration when you’re shopping for affordable last minute Christmas gifts for someone you love.

3 Fun Easter Ideas for Your Family to Enjoy

March 14, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

My kids and I always enjoy the fun and festivities that come along with the Easter holiday.  I’m always looking for new ways to spruce up our “normal” festivities to include fun games that everyone of all ages will enjoy.  Here are three 3 fun Easter ideas for your family to enjoy this year.

1- Glow In The Dark Easter Eggs
Glow in the Dark Easter Eggs
Here’s a fun and original Easter idea for the family. Instead of doing your Easter Egg hunt in the daytime, why not have the hunt in the wee early hours of the morning, before sunrise, when it’s still dark, in your backyard!  These Easter eggs glow in the dark so they’re easier to find! They come 12 to a pack.
2- Easter Photo Prop

easterphotosOne way to have some Easter fun with your family is to have a photo shoot! This photo prop allows you to take special pictures with your kids and create memories that will last a lifetime.  It depicts the Easter bunny in a beautiful spring scene surrounded by birds and colorful Easter eggs. Have your children put their faces in the cutout to take a picture for Instagram or Facebook!
3- Talking Easter Egg

Talking Easter EggI love this idea! Basically, it’s a talking egg that gives the little ones clues on how to find their Easter eggs.  It’s just an added layer of excitement for them. In my experience, it’s usually the really young ones who get frustrated when they’re unable to find eggs during the hunt, so this will help them out. The batteries are even included with purchase.  So all you have to do is find a great hiding spot! The come in a variety of cute Easter colors including blue, pink and yellow.

3 St. Patrick’s Day Must Haves – Stuff to Wear

February 20, 2015 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

St. Patrick’s Day is soon approaching and many of us are planning to visit a bar, party or parade to enjoy the day’s festivities.  Whether you are of Irish descent or not, we all want to have fun celebrating on St. Patty’s Day!  So, I did some searching on my favorite site (Amazon) to look for some humorous costumes, shirts and accessories that would make the day enjoyable for me and my friends.

Green Retro Aviator Glasses!

Screenshot 2015-02-20 04.55.20The first accessory that I found was a pair of green retro aviator glasses.  You can pretty much get these and you’re all set for St. Patrick’s Day fun. An added bonus is that they can be worn year round.  There’s also an option to buy 3 pair — one for you and one for two of your friends! They have UV ray protection and are very affordable.

Shamrock Leg Warmers — Let’s Get Physical!

41q-prm7YIL._UX466_Anyone remember the 80s? I used to have the whole Get in Shape Girl kit — leg warmers and all! Take it back to the “old school” by wearing a pair of shamrock leg warmers on the bid day.  They are really cute and functional.  I remember last year while at the St. Patty’s Day parade my calves were freezing!  So these might come in handy!

Irish Green Tutu

Screenshot 2015-02-20 04.57.16If you have a young girl (or girl at heart) that will be celebrating with you on St. Patrick’s day, this green tutu is a must-have.  I have a few friends (both female and male who would probably wear this tutu to celebrate a crazy and fun St. Patty’s Day!

Have fun this St. Patrick’s Day, and be safe!

Tips for How to Throw a Gift Wrapping Party

December 19, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

If you are looking to start a fun and yearly tradition with your friends, a gift wrapping party is a great idea. Here are some tips to get you started.

Call, email or e-vite a group of friends and invite them to your house for a gift wrapping party. Have each person bring a bottle of wine and an appetizer. More importantly, they should bring the gifts that they want to be wrapped.

Each person should also bring 2-3 rolls of gift paper, ribbons, tape, gift boxes and scissors.

Have everyone put the rolls of paper in an umbrella holder. You may want to have a gift amount cut off. For example, no more than 5 large and 5 small gifts to be wrapped.

Now make space on the living room floor, if you don’t have a large enough dining room table.

Begin wrapping, while laughing and having grown up conversations. Make sure to play awesome holiday music, keep the wine glasses filled and the food flowing. Best of all is that you, the host, will be be spending quality time drinking with your friends and accomplishing the tedious chore of wrapping gifts for the holidays.

How to Make an Ugly Christmas Sweater

December 19, 2014 By LovingOurHome.com Leave a Comment

Whether you are attending an ugly Christmas sweater party or entering a contest, here are a few tips on how to make your own sweater to fit the event.

I suggest that you first, give your local thrift store a visit. If you can’t find a Christmas themed sweater there, then look for a solid red or green sweater.

In addition to the sweater, you’ll need a glue gun, green or red felt, appliqués, shiny garland, needle and thread, iron, scissors and stick pins.

Instructions:

Lay out all of your supplies including sweater on the kitchen table or on the floor. If you have appliqués, follow the directions and iron them to the front of sweater. If you don’t have appliqués, you can cut the felt into Christmas shapes. For example Christmas trees, snowflakes or stars. Next pin them onto the sweater in various places. Then simply, sew each piece securely to the sweater using a needle and thread. Perfection is hardly important–after all this is an ugly Christmas sweater!

Next, cut pieces of garland and using the glue gun, glue it to the hem of your sweater. Now take smaller pieces of garland and attach them to various spots between your appliqués.

You can make the design as obnoxious and gaudy as you like. For example, maybe some garland around the collar, on the sleeves or even on the seems of the sweater. Just be creative as you like and have fun. You’re sure to get a laugh when wearing your ugly Christmas sweater.

Happy Holidays!!
